Fragrant days
“Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” John 12:1-3
My Abba,
I really don’t know how to express myself right now. This morning, your beauty overwhelms me. You disarm all the pain, confusion, fatigue, failure, and disappointment that needles my heart.
I know you are always with me. But when you open my heart to notice you in a deeper way, it makes me insatiable for your presence.
You set this feast before me. I have tasted and seen that your love is better than life. I do not want to forget. Make my hunger for you consuming. Just to enjoy a small taste of your presence is delightful. Please draw me back again and again.
I want you to extravagantly nourish our connection. I want to spend myself on this forever love. Empower me to pour out the perfume of my praise before you. Fill my life with the captivating fragrance of our relationship, my beautiful God.
I love you,
Mollie
My child,
I love that you are drawn to this account of Mary’s sacrificial devotion. Even though her actions were costly and utterly humbling, it was well worth it to her. She was willing to devote her life to the One who gave her life and would continue to enliven her.
When soldiers go into battle, they are not as apt to make sacrifices for their superiors and country, if they are just compelled by the duty of “shoulds” and “ought to’s.” But a deep devotion for their commander, fellow soldiers, and country will inspire heroic acts.
You want to live in devotion to me because of who I am. An ever-deepening connection with me is worth everything. Our relationship will inspire you to live for me courageously.
I know you can be distracted at times, but your heart is toward me. Don’t get fixated on serving, like Martha did, and miss the glorious excitement and mystery of my love.
Allow me to permeate every corner of your heart. You will never go away dissatisfied. I am the God who satisfies needs you don’t even know you have.
Sit and soak in me. Then serve. As you steep in my love, your service will become the lingering fragrance of our connection.
I love you,
Abba
